Why have my kitchen knives gone rusty?

See user ratings

No steel is completely “stainless”.  If you do not care for your kitchen knives properly they will rust, stain or pit.  Always rinse off acidic foods (tomatoes, mustard, citrus juices etc.).  Acid can cause tarnishing.

To clean your kitchen knives that are showing signs of rust or staining, use a non-abrasive metal polish to clean them.

Can I put my kitchen knives into the dishwasher?

See user ratings

Although a number of suppliers advise that kitchen knives are dishwasher safe, ekitchenknives.co.uk do not recommend you put your kitchen knives into the dishwasher.  When your kitchen knives bang against other cutlery, dishwasher racks or pots and pans this will nick your blades.

Putting your kitchen knives into the dishwasher will also affect the handles over time, causing them to discolour or crack.

To clean your kitchen knives, just wipe clean with a wet cloth and washing up liquid.  Dry your kitchen knives immediately.

How should I store my kitchen knives?

See user ratings

Kitchen knives should always be stored in a safe place to protect its edge and to avoid injury.

In the home, kitchen knives can be stored in a knife block, a knife drawer tray within protective sleeves or on a magnetic knife rack which is wall mounted.

A knife block provides easy access to your kitchen knives.  The size of blocks varies depending on how many kitchen knives you need to store.

Knife drawer trays are useful if you want to keep your worktops clear.  Always use protective sleeves on your kitchen knives when using a knife drawer tray.

Magnetic knife racks are wall mounted and provide easy access to your kitchen knives if you don’t have a lot of worktop space.  Always purchase a good quality magnetic knife rack with strong magnets to hold your kitchen knives securely in place.  Always ensure your kitchen knives are completely clean and dry when using a magnetic knife rack as grease can interfere with the magnet’s ability to hold your kitchen knives.
